    i hav as my spare comp a intel celeron 1000mhz pc, im wondering if i can upgrade the cpu to a 2.6ghz. can i do this on a old motherboard thanks dan

    It really depends on the motherboard and the overall architecture. If it's a PGA 370 Celeron (Pentium3-based), you can't install a P4 processor. Even if it is a P4 socket, your motherboard's chipset will likely prove to be an inhibiting factor.

    The Socket 370 Celerons went up to like 1.2GHz or so, then jumped to Socket 478 at 1.7GHz. I'm pretty positive you've got a Socket 370 Celeron.

    Still, as AT said, there's also the chipset to contend with, and even if you can upgrade...I'm not sure that'd be the most effective upgrade for you.
