hi yall, is there some way to recomfigure Konqueror or FF on Mandriva to work with www.asda.co.uk or do i have to download WINE and use IE (don't know how to configure WINE)
Can't go on it right now in Linux, but you might want to try Opera for that site. If you've added your software repositories then do "urpmi opera" as root to install it.
Those images are just GIF files so they should show up. I've tested it on Konqueror/Kubuntu and it's working OK
on the left hand side (where it says "Loading Store" then displays "Shopping Isles") i think it requires JAVA (but i could be wrong) have i accidently disabled it do you think, FF <Edit> <Preferences> <Web Features> <Advanced Java> Allow scripts to: enabled move or resize existing... raise or lower windows disable or replace cont... change images disabled hide status bar hide status bar text
Java is not installed by default on most Linux distributions. You will need to install it yourself. Either by downloading the Java Runtime Edition from Java's website, or downloading from the Mandriva Repositories. Again, I don't actually know if Java is in the Mandriva repositories so you'll have to ask a Mandriva user.
downloaded JAVA but when trying to install, error Code: [dave@hayes ~]$ su Password: [root@hayes dave]# cd /home/dave/Download/ [root@hayes Download]# ./jre-1_5_0_07-linux-i586-rpm.bin bash: ./jre-1_5_0_07-linux-i586-rpm.bin: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Text file busy [root@hayes Download]# don't know what to do now ?
no, if you click groceries asda site tells you it requires IE or nutscrape any other browser to try (that doesn't use IE's browser engine)
the site loads ok in Koquerer until you login, FF won't load images and when logged in won't display whole page, opera just says site only compatable with IE or nutscrape, surely theres another alternative pwease pwease pwease
sorted it, i just got opera to lie to site, browse to site, <Tools> <Quick Prefererences> <Edit Site Preferences> <Network> identify as IE and in Control Centre <Web Browsing> <browser identification> then click add, and enter the site name (www.example.com) and opera is now (to all intence and puposes) IE (as far as a particular site is concerned)
well you get a damn sight for your money than MS (Openoffice and stuff) plus its free, and theres a hell of a lot more going for linux than i thought (not just no spyware, antivirus & firwall (except firewall built into my router) i won't be going back, I'll probably stick with Mandriva for about 6 months before deciding which distro's best for me (then again i may give Unbuntu another go, gentoo also looks not bad, but before jumping into gentoo i may be better of trying FreeBSD) theres plenty to choose from
FreeBSD is not Linux. Its quite different, it uses the BSD kernel and applications for BSD are found using the "ports" system. It uses a different class of file systems I believe also. Ports compiles all applications for BSD especially. Gentoo has a steep learning curve, so I wouldn't try that until you are comfortable with using the system from the command line entirely.
The majority of distros will be fine for trying, you just happened to choose two ones which may need a bit of experience.
i tought gentoo was based on FreeBSD, and i thought FreeBSD was linux, guessing i was right in saying "i'll try Mandriva for (or until i adust back to command line, as it was years ago (DOS)) 6 months to a year, before coosing a distro that suits me bestfor me"
