When I startup or reboot it makes a double beep and takes a long time to boot, if I enter the bios the slave isn't recognized. Is the slave toast? Dual boot with Vista Business and XP pro, the slave was for storage. No recent hardware or software changes, it just doesn't show up. Any help would be appreciated.

more system info would help, however, you could check beep codes here, & have you tried setting the drives on 0 IDE channel to C/S (cable select)

Edit: i have had to presume a lot because the info you provided was rather sparse

    3.2gig p4
    1 gig ddr2 ram
    nvidia geforce 7600gs gpu
    asus p5nd2 sli motherboard

I checked the beep codes for Phoenix but none of them matched up to what it is doing (one beep when it powers up then the two quick beeps) and I don't know how to set the drives on 0 IDE channel to C/S (cable select)

well, there are usually 2 IDE channels (although newer mobo's have 1 & SATA) they are labeled 0 (zero) & 1 and both channels can be connected to a maximum of 2 IDE devices (ATAPI), 1 master & 1 slave (which you know) C/S is another way to define the master & slave, if you look at your driver jumper block (where the jumper is that specifies master or slave) you will see C/S, the way it works is: the device attached to the end of the IDE cable becomes the master & yeah, you've guessed it, the device attach to the middle connector becomes the slave

so, just move the jumper from master & slave to C/S and retry

BTW: if your mobo has 2 IDE channels, each channel defines master & slave independently, so you don't have to set both channels to C/S

with the POST beep problem you may find that the mystery beep disapears

BTW: on my system all HDD are set to C/S cos jumpers can only be moved about 50 times, then the jumper is dead

Thanks for the help, but on my board it has jumper free configuration, I'm not trying to be a pain in the posterior, just don't know hardware that well.

sh1t, should have said, the jumpers are actually on the IDE devices (hard drives)

    BTW:
would i ever say that (i may think it) but @ HWF we're here to help, if you have any questions or don't understand something, just ask, everyone has to learn, i wasn't born knowing stuff about computers, i had to learn

had a similar issue once. try to put the potentially dead slave as a single master to see if it's really toast. if the drive seems to be okay, try and change your IDE cable.
