Socket M2

    Does anyone know when this will come out, and when it comes out will it have nforce 5. And are new sockets gererally expensive when they first come out.

    Well i thnk i saw it at tomshardware and it is supposed to be AMDs swithch to DDR2 and all dual cores or something

    There's been very small bits about it. Right now, I don't think we'll see it really mainstream for at least a good two years. It's still vaporware as no samples have shown up with socket M2, even non-functioning samples. I think if you see them in trade show coverage, you'll likely see them with in the following year. As of right now, I would not expect, at the earliest, to see any M2 stuff, let alone nF5 until sometime in 2006, and that would be strictly at trade shows for display purposes.

    AMD is probably going to go to DDR 2 eventually, but there's also a few competing next-gen formats, like XDR (from everybody's favorite RAM company, Rambus). However, since DDR2 is actually a proven staple at this point, I'd wager on DDR2 being more or less guaranteed.

    Price-wise, I would expect that, like any new premium technology, that the M2 stuff will be on the high side to start. However, you'll see it drop as production ramps up to get it into the hands of the masses. This is pretty much how things tend to go anyway.
