I'm sure someone has already asked this question but I couldn't find the thread answering it so...

Does anyone know if there will be games that will only playable on vista?
I heard halo 2 was like that and wanted to know if anyone knew anything about it.

I think that it will not be true til nxt couple of years coz no game company would like to loose/risk money on DX10....wat do u think?

I agree, however Microsoft is behind halo and vista so... I can see them making halo 2 require vista so they get 3x the money from people buying vista.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I've heard that DX10 is to Vista as DX9L is to XP (meaning DX9L=DX10), thus meaning - game's using DX10 will be playable also on XP.

I've heard that too. I've also heard that DX9L is what Vista will ship with. DX10 is a major change over the previous DirectX versions. It's different from the ground up. Supposedly, this is the reason why we won't see DX10 in XP. There's some major changes in Vista, but not a lot are easily seen. Aero is the most distinct superficial change. From what I've heard, the DX9L/DX10 combo makes more sense than DX9L being DX10 for XP. The reason is the integration DX10 requires and the major changes it makes. It's not just another update, it's a vastly different API.

Most games won't be DX10 for awhile, but we will see games that look vastly better on DX10 hardware than DX9.

Vastly?? I very much hope your wrong. Seeing as how I am looking to upgrade to a 7900gs(dx9) and wont have the money for a dx10 for quite some time.(and hopefully shouldnt need to)

I'm definetly a big gamer but not a picky one, I use my 6200oc to play bf 2142 and I don't see any slowdowns or bad graphics. So i'm not 100% sure but I don't think that having dx9 and not dx10 will bother me much, but if you say "vastly" that worrys me.

Well, DX10 is a nice upgrade over DX9. Beyond that, I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. I *doubt* it's going to be required for awhile. While we can hope that all games would be as flexible as HL2, I wouldn't bank on it. There's a lot of speculation along with the facts out there, and I simply haven't been able to sort through it all. I can't see the game industry automatically flipping over to Vista/DX10 only support just yet. Some of this stuff, I'm just as confused as the rest of you.

What I do know is that DX10 is going to offer some major benefits. Now, stuff like Alan Wake, I'm not sure off-hand if they're really DX10 shots or not.

DX10 steps up from what I've been reading, and I would hope so, given that each subsequent release of DirectX adds extra features. The real-time day/night and weather conditions are supposed to benefit from DX10, so Crysis and Alan Wake will look better. I suppose there could be a nice little addtion in the control panel if you have DX10, but I'm only speculating.

The 7900GS is a nice card, which I'll hopefully have a review up soon (as in Christmas-shopping time).
