    ok here goes--she turns on goes to windows screen with the little blue loading line that goes from side to side-except no blue thingy-then to my log on screen and it just stays black and no cursor appears at all.
    also goes into safe mode and just sits there with all the jargon on the screen not fully going into safe mode.
    also last known settings that worked has no effect at all so im stuck with this old laptop.
    any input appreciated thanks KEV

    I'd try installing Windows on top of itself---if you have the Windows CD of whatever version you're running.

    or you could do a repair (roughly same steps up to installing over; just choose repair), means you wont get two copies of windows on the same HDD

    with the loading line being blue it's XP SP2
    the original release was yellow
    i don't know what colour SP1 was

    but i would reinstall XP over itself

    ahh! is it green, :smahd:

    so,
    original = yellow
    SP1 = green
    SP2 = blue

    well B obviously doesn't know, cos he'd have known the O/S if he did

    Hello KEVSPREAD and Welcome

    A Repair Install seems to be in order

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

    Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

    1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

    2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

    3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

    4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

    5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

    6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

    If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

    Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

    Hey! My "little blue loading line that goes from side to side" is actually blue. And I have SP1! At least that's what it says in Control Panel > System. Were u guys perhaps talking about WinXP Home? I got Pro.
