So my Windows partition is growing ever smaller on my power PC as I install more and more distros...

I thought I'd try the 6.06 version of Kubuntu, since Gnome wasn't my thing. And maybe nvidia drivers would work. Installed it with the new installer and it seemed fine.

That is, until I tried to install build-essential. Ubuntus don't install the package by default, so it needs to be done before any compiling is possible. Boy did it give me a headache.

I thought that it would be as simple as doing "apt-get install build-essential". After about an hour of wondering why it wouldn't install it when the media was fine I realised that the sources.list file doesn't include the cdrom repo by default unlike Ubuntu. WTF?

Solution? As simple as "apt-cdrom add"
But it would be so much simpler if it was done by default. Geez...:swear:

That's bizarre. The CD-ROM repositories were enabled by default on my Kubuntu box.

So what are your thoughts on Kubuntu?

I think its ok as a Mandriva alternative. Still some things that aren't great, like the fact that installing nvidia drivers seems to be a nightmare that was easy in Mandriva. I've tried the apt repository driver and still no luck. Oh well, 3d acceleration will have to wait.
