I put together a list of hardware and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions/feedback on better possible hardware for my $$. Anyways, here's the list. -DFI LAN PARTY UT NF4 ULTRA-D -OCZ Platinum EL PC3200 1GB 2X512MB DDR400 CL2-3-2-5 Dual Channel -AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Processor S939 San Diego 2.4GHZ 1MB L2 Cache 90NM -2x(BFG GeForce 7800GT OC 256MB 256BIT GDDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV VIVO SLI) -LG DVD-RW combo drive -Enermax All In One EG565P-VE 535W -2x(Maxtor DiamondMax 10 100GB 7200RPM 8MB SATA Hard Drive) In RAID 0 -Antec P160W Anodized Aluminum Super Mid ATX Tower **EDIT** Decided to take out the 2x Maxtor's, and throw in these: -3x(80GB WD SATA) In RAID 0 And go with Big B's suggested mbo -DFI LanParty nF4 SLI-DR
Any particular reason you're going for Maxtor? Wouldn't Western Digitals perform better/be me reliable? Its a good system overall, but if I were you I'd wait a while for socket AM2 from AMD with DDR2 support. The 4000 is expensive, and you could probably get a decent AM2 chip for the price of that. As well your video cards. Why don't you get a G71 or see how it performs when its released? Might be better for your money than SLI. Or even ATi, but I prefer nVidia for Linux.
Thanks for the insight Addis. I took a second look and 80GB WD SATA's are only $58, I'll get 3 I guess. As for the AM2, is there an ETA for it? For the video cards, I prefer nVidia right now because they're whoopin ATI with SLI. Also, ETA on the G71?
You planning to mod the Ultra-D so it'll do SLI? The nForce 4 Ultra chipset does not natively support SLI, but it can be modded to. I'd have to find a link, but you can find that info over at DFI Street if you're intrested in it. Otherwise, go with the SLI-D/SLI-DR (the DR has the extra RAID chip for 8 SATA ports total). That's about it as far as my thoughts go.
It's like $20-30 for the SLI board over the Ultra, but you get the SLI bridge with the SLI board, which was around $20 itself if you buy it online.
