    Please give your suggestions ..
I have got dual OS Suse Linux and XP installed in Pentium IV 2.4 GHz machine ...RAM - 512 MB HDD - 80 GB No Graphics Card

My system freezes after I log in, in about 10 or 15 minutes.Thought that this may be an XP problem and tried Linux...The problem persisted ....Decided that its a hardware related issue ....

If I allow it to cool for some 4 hrs it works again for some 2 hrs ...I have been using the system for 2 years now ...had few overheating problems ...would then clean the system and it will go smooth...

When I googled for system freeze I get several articles related to HDD failure ...am confused :(

Now how should I proceed ...

    firstly welcome to hwf

it may be a overheating problem beacuse you say you worked for two hours after giving a break

otherwise the heating problem may have penetrated the hdd if you are sure that the hdd is damaged

but i think before anything, you should try to format the hdd it may be a booting problem as linux may have been damaged and xp is starting from linux while booting so a format will do it may be if you cannot format hdd try low level formatting but this will damage hdd a little bit anyway it will be better than buying a new one

another case is the thermal paste on cpu may have spilt around check it too beacuse it is the most case of thermal problems

gotta remove the cooler out from the cpu and check for the loss of paste on the coolers copper back and your cpu, they'll catch your attention immediately

well there is not that kind of software but some tuners can help maybe to keep registry keys stable

check CCleaner - Home but i don't think that it will work

also when you remove the cooler (i think it's the stock intel one) remove the fan bridge on the Al blocks and clean the dust between them with an elect. sweeper
