Probably an Opteron or Athlon 64. The Pentium 4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition is no slouch, but the other two CPU's are comparable and cost several hundred dollars less.

How much are you looking to spend?

Right now the 2500+ offers the best bang for your buck.

If you're into intel, you gotta' look at a P4 2.4C if you wanna' oc, or a 2.6C if you don't.

Add one more vote for the Barton 2500+ in the 'bang-for-buck' category.

If you want pure power, get the p4 2.4C and oc it.

If you want bang for your bucks, try to get an unlocked 2500+

Exactly. IMO, it's stupid to alienate one side or the other. Both are plenty fast and stable. AMD tends to have the edge with pricing, but it's no longer the massive gap it used to be.
