ok i've upgraded my very slow thinkpad 600e (300mhz) with windows xp home edition, how do i get it to run faster?
Given the age, you're probably left with very little. I'd upgrade your RAM to the max amount. I will tell you that since it uses SDR SDRAM (as opposed to DDR SDRAM), you're going to find it a bit pricey to do this. I'd hit up Crucial to see what they can hook you up with for memory upgrades. I'm not sure what options are available to you for a hard drive upgrade, but that might be something else to look into. However, I would not put a lot of money into that laptop. If you try to max out the RAM and upgrade the hard drive, you could look at $300-400, and that laptop may not be worth much more than that at max value. If you really want something faster, ultimately, you'll want to buy a new unit. Hell, you can put a cheap desktop together for probably around $400-500 with some decent parts. What you want to do is up to you, but I wouldn't pump a whole lot of cash into that Thinkpad.
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?model=ThinkPad+600E+Series+(Type+2645)&tabid=AM There you go. It looks like you're limited to 288MB of PC100 total. If you're anywhere close to that (like 256MB), you're unlikely to find that maxing out the RAM will do you much good, if any.
That setup barely meets the minimum requirements for XP. 233 MHz is the min. Personalyy I wouldn't use XP on that. I am going to assume the laptop came with Win 95. If you use Win 2000, you may see a performance jump because it is optimized for lesser performance. And besides, XP is basically a re-facing of 2000, so you don't lose much, if any functionality. But I wouldn't put any money into that beast of a machine . I wouldn't go past software tweaks.
