I thought to myself, I should really find out what all this F@H stuff is all about. It was for a good cause so I downloaded it, only to figure out that I'm going to do absolutly nothing for the team because I have dial-up. I should have thought of this before hand and saved myself the embarrasment but what's done is done. I take it I have to complete one WU before my name hits the lists right? Well that will be in what, May! For one WU! Ergh, this is not good. Is it possible to hold the team back by having a member with no WU's? Or is it the more members the better? Tell me the 'shot below isn't right.
the graphical client uses more resources, using the text only 'no-nonsense' client will finish a WU faster. Even though you have dial-up that does not effect your WU speed, only your Upload/download speed. You don't hold us back having 0 WU's.
Having more or less team members doesn't matter... It's all about the amount of points the team gets.. so if a team with two members gets the same amount of points as a team with 200 members, they are equal. And I am on dial-up also, so it is possible to Fold and make a difference. So just make sure to go online when you finish a WU and let the site upload your info and you download the new thing to work on and you can stay offline till its finished. If you know you wont be home for a while to go online, just turn it off till you can be there when it finishes.
Thanks guys, appreciated. If I tried to do some CPU intensive task I wouldn't notice a drop in performance would I? If I do I can just quit and start F@H again right? thanks.
I think you may notice a difference depending on how cpu intensive it is... I personally am able to do anything while it's on, but I more than likely have a better processor than you (no offense). And yes, if you do notice a drop you can just turn it off and back on again later when you're doing nothing. *edit* With your 64bit 3000 I dont think you'll have a problem.
Thanks, that's good, (and no offense taken). After all you have what is probably the second best system on the forums (out of those that actuallychoose to use their "my computer" option anyway).
I'm able to play and do everything I normally do with F@H running. The only time I'd have F@H off is if I were doing some benchmarking for a review...which hopefully will happen within the next month.
There's very little performance drop, as the client uses a very low priority, and when you need to do something CPU intensive it gives up the CPU cycles for the program. The GUI version is slower, but if you have an OpenGL graphics card the extra CPu cycles needed is minimal.
What's the site I have to go to once I finish a WU? I just upload my results and download a new task somewhere?
Well i'm on my last WU - with my PC being used quite intensively CPU wise whilst its on anyway, WU's hve been slow, and only getting 300-400Points per WU :good: none the less - my last one before it gets shut off 2morrow (i unpacked it hehe), until i get back :good:
I had my PC running all day and I had it on at night but then I went to bed and my dad shut it down without me knowing. So now all my progress is lost?! Do I have to wait for a WU to finish untill I automatically (without connecting?) get a new one, but can't quit F@H? Thanks.
you can only receive a new Work Unit (WU) whilst connected to the internet. When you are configuring F@H you can set it's "check time" or something which allows you to save your work every X minutes, default its set to 15, so u would have lost 15 minutes progress. I suggest setting it lower to say 3 or 4 minutes if ur machine is turned off alot - and i would make sure your computer isn't set to send/receive work units of 5MB or bigger.
How would you go about doing this? I know Procal won't be answering because he's gone but does anyone else know?
Right click the icon and go to configure, the go to advance and its the second slidey bar Arn't I ever so technical
I got my second work unit but I'm not on the list with one WU completed? Must take awhile or I didn't configure something right...
