The Debian-based distribution has won its latest accolade from a Linux community site

Ubuntu has been voted the best Linux distribution on the market by the users of a Linux community site.

LinuxQuestions.org reported on Monday that of the 2500 users that voted in a site poll, 19.5 percent voted for Ubuntu as the Linux distribution of the year, narrowly beating Slackware, which received 19 percent of the votes.

This is the latest in a long line of awards that Ubuntu has racked up over the last six months, an impressive achievement considering that the distribution is less than two years old.

In November 2005, Ubuntu Linux 5.10 was named the Editor's Choice for small businesses by ZDNet UK, beating the commercial distributions Novell Linux Desktop 9, SUSE Linux 10, Red Hat Desktop 4 and Mandriva Linux 2006.

Ubuntu also won the Best Debian Derivative Distribution award in a ceremony at Germany's Linux World Expo in November. In October, it was awarded the Reader's Choice Award by Linux Journal and the Reader Award at the UK Linux & Open Source Awards dinner.

The Ubuntu project puts down its success to the fact that it produces regular and predictable releases, is easy to install and is "absolutely free of charge", unlike many commercial Linux distributions, according to the project Web site.

However, some businesses may be reluctant to use this distribution, as it is mainly supported by smaller third parties, who may not be able to offer the contractual guarantees that larger vendors such as Red Hat or Novell can provide.

    Well deserved!!!

    I think Kubuntu Rocks!!!
There are still a lot to be done packages wise but all in all, for a distro which fits on one CD, it is the bom!

I am using it and enjoy it tremendously!

AT knows my heart is in the right place.... :swt:
He is the ones who helped me to discover the wonders of Mandriva.

I use Mandriva on my PC and Kubuntu on my laptop.
So I get to see both types. I have not used Kubuntu in a while because my modem only connects one computer at a time...
    Poor ol' me.....[/ot]

Why don't you buy a second NIC for the desktop, and connect your laptop to it via a crossover cable?

That way both computers can share the internet & files[/ot]

I do have my qualms with Ubuntu, but I feel it is a decent enough distro that I've recommended it many times on the forums in addition to deploying it myself in some situations. I'll be sticking with and recommending Mandriva for a desktop distro, but I want to make it known that I would prefer any Linux distro to Windows, and I can say that with extreme confidence as I am stuck on an all Windows network at my new job. It's kind of ironic, as our primary product line is BSD-based hardware. *shrugs* But anyway, the point is that I feel a well-configured *nix workstation is the most efficient and elegant use of a computer one can make. If Ubuntu's success can help people see the truth about Linux despite the steady flow of FUD coming out of Redmond, more power to Ubuntu!

P.S. - If you'll notice, there's a link to Kubuntu in my sig.

I didn't realise they were giving away free CDs! :jump2: I was wondering what you were on about!

I checked out their website earlier to see what all the fuss was about. I am very impressed with what I've seen.
I love their philosophy on the opening page; their website is very welcoming & down to earth. It's a complete contrast to the cold & corporate pages at Novell for example!

I've ordered 10 Windows + 3 AMD64 + 2 MAC, and I shall be giving them out to all the Micro$laves at work!

Couldn't wait till the CDs arrived, so i've downloaded the live CDs. I have to say I'm really impressed with this distribution. I didn't like GNOME much, but it works really well in Ubuntu. Prehaps it was SuSEs poor implementation of GNOME that put me off?

Everything is well laid out and easy to use. I actually quite like the browness of it all :D I didn't like it in the screenshots, but when you see it for real it's quite pleasent. Makes a nice change from blue anyway!

Overall I prefer KDE, but Gnome isn't bad. I'd prefer KDE for desktop day to day usage, but for office uses I'd probably go Gnome. I don't dislike it, as my first experience with it was using CentOS and seemed sleek and polished. KDE for apps though, can't beat it.
