recently reinstalled windows XP pro SP2, on my sony vaio laptop.

i'm trying to copy data i backed up onto an external HDD back onto my internal hdd.
Ext. HDD is: SATA, USB, Icy Box Enclosure. WD 500gb

At always the same point during the copy, it simply stops progressing. this causes my computer to stop responding (switching off the ext. HDD will solve the unresponsiveness.
this only seems happens when copying data quantities of about 2gb or more.
there's no physical signs of damage to the HDD itself.
could it be a faulty sata to usb connection?
    a software issue?
any ideas would be much appreciated.

Edit: Both drives are on NTFS

Are you transferring through USB or eSATA? You mentioned 'sata to usb connection', but I'm guessing you're using one or the other, and not an adapter. Is this an issue when transferring a single file over 2gb, or a group of files that total over 2gb? It's not a problem with a select number of files, but any file, right?

yeh... it's a SATA HDD connected to a SATA to USB enclosure.

the problem occurs when transferring a group of files totaling ~2gb.
i've ruled out the enclosure as being the problem.
i've also tried copying the files onto 2 different internal HDDs.
it must be the external HDD failing?

Have you tried running CHKDSK or transferring files to a different computer?

    tried a ckhdsk /f

no reported errors; 0KB in bad sectors
i did get a new error message when copying a single file (an mp3)
Cannot copy ...... : Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
