unable to read a backup I burned with Nero

Hi. I made a backup CD of folders I wanted to keep before I reformatted my hard drive. When I put the CD in, I can see all the folders and files but when I click on a file, Explorer stops responding. If I start with Word, then try to open a file I get the same thing - Not Responding. I wonder if I messed up when I burned, but I don't recall any problems when burning. I guess I should have checked. I was hoping that Nero compressed the data somehow and that I could recover the files using Nero, but not sure what I did.
Any ideas? Again, I can see all the folder and file names, I just can't open any files except for, and this is weird, pictures!

 

You mentioned that you reformatted your hard drive, have you re installed all the programs?

 

What program did you use to make the doc's, Word ? You will need the same program to open doc's or what ever that you made them in..
