understanding the uses of cd's

My first post.
Please be patient.
Getting right to it.
I can burn a cd.
I can play a cd.

I can't get a cd recognized to 'tranfer' documents to cd's.
Whether in my D: , or E: , makes no differnece.
I get the same 'error' messages.

A little history.
I used tobe able to tranfer my douments to a floppy by dragging.
I used 'Windows Explorer'.
Easy as pie.
Click on the appropriate doc, and drag it toi the floppy drive.

Now, I have installed a cd burner.
Like I said, I have burned a few cd's.
No problems.

I can put a cd in either drive and access the info on them.

When I try the drag & drop method of moving files using my cd drives, I get one of two error messages.

The first being, "No Disk In Drive", which there is.
The second being, "D:\ is not accessible The device is not ready".

Can anyone enlighten this old guy, how to put files on cd's ????

I am using a E-Machine, that is 4 years old, with Windows 98SE.
I don't think this is all of the problem.

Are you using explorer to drag and drop files? Windows 98SE doesn't have to capability to drag and drop files to cd and burn them. If you want to be able to do that then you need burning software like Nero or install software that allows drag and drop burning.
 
Yeah find software to burn sometimes Windows builtin software dose not work well. Other burning software dose work really good and their are some good free ones out thier. Go to www.download.com they have some good burning software thier for free.
 
They both pretty much covered it. Personally, I prefer Nero burning ROM, and it's one of the more popular burning software titles besides Roxio's EZ CD Creator. I don't know what burner you had, but if you bought it new, it should have some burning software with it, check that before you start looking to buy software. Right now, I'm not aware of any free burning software, unless you want to count trial versions. You might be able to get Nero Express (a dumbed down Nero burning ROM) for free or very cheap, but from my experience it had the tendency to lock up my system.
 
I think what you're trying to do is use a cd as a floppy ?

To do that, you will need a cd-rw media. But I've had too many problems with them so I never use them.

If you're talking about files that you will delete later, then I suggest you use a memory stick instead. It's small, it's fast and it's reliable. You will need drivers if you're gonna' use one under Win98 though (which come with the stick)

Gene: O.K., I accept your knowledge, that explorer won't do this for me.
This is where i need the help. Please, step by step, how do I copy files to cd, using windows 98SE. I do have Nero installed. Being 'green as grass', I need all the help I can muster.

yes, Harrack 52, I guess i am/was trying to use my cd as a floppy.
With my limited knowledege, I was trying just that.
Not knowing any other way.
I would try anything, that Im thought would work.
It didn't.

I will graciously accept any and all help learning the proper way to copy my files to cd.

Well it can be done, but you need the right media. You will need a cd-rw to do that, not a cd-r.

You will also need InCD which you can download from the Nero website.

That's if you wanna' use your cd as a floppy.

If not, then just burn your files through Nero.

The reason you can drag & drop in XP is it has a built-in burning software (which sucks because of its extremely limited options).
 
You are running Nero, dragging files over to the CD you want to put data on, and the hitting the burn button on the toolbar, right?
