I'm experiencing an unusual lock-up when running the game Battlefield 1942... although I'm certain it's not a problem with the game itself, it just seems to be the trigger.

After few seconds in the game I hear a 'tock' noise from the hard drive followed by the sound of it spinning up, then the audio turns into pops & crackles, with a few recognisable sounds... so not the average crash sound looping. After this it's HD light permanently on & hard reset required. If I quit the game when i hear the HD 'tock', I have time to get out to windows & a see that Battlefield isn't a running process before windows locks.

I've been running Battlefield without problems on my current setup with no (known) changes for months, drivers are all up-to-date & machine runs great. Nothing's overclocked. I've tried re-installing Battlefield just in case but no difference. So far the machine isn't locking at any other time.

Would anyone know what's causing the HD to 'reset' like this?

thanks in advance for any advice,

It sucks, but it sounds like that hard drive is on it's way out. I'd back up your important files immediately. Next, use the MaxBlast tools (or whatever Maxtor packages now) to scan the drive if you want. Lastly, if you don't want to wait for a few weeks for Maxtor's RMA process, go grab a new hard drive. Now, to Maxtor's credit, they have a pretty smooth RMA process, so you should have a good turn around.

I have a similar problem with my HD. Unfortunately i havn't found any way to solve it so your probably going to have to RMA it like me.

    Thanks for the suggestions. :good:

I came to the same conclusion myself... just didn't want to believe it

It's the first Maxtor that's died on me & just when i'd almost gotten over the death of 4 IBM deskstars in a row.... now there was a reliable drive :chk:

    Cheers again.
