How would I go about getting Firefox 2 on my Dapper Drake Ubuntu?

Im trying to do it the simple way and use the package manager but it only lists Firefox 1.5 as available to install. I was about to download it outside of Ubuntu (source or deb file) but surely it will be easier to use the add/remove programs thing?

If I were to download a .deb file how would I install that? Would it appear in the package manger automatically? I know my modem didnt but I compiled that from source so didnt really expect it to. How can I get stuff I compile from source into the package manager? I used to do this with gpaco so surely its possible in Ubuntu.

    Thanks, Zeus.

You have just asked the very question I was going to ask as I want to do the same thing!

    Addis,

Thank you very much. I just went to the link and followed the simple instructions to download FF 2.0, typed the said command in the terminal and everything was automatically unpacked and installed. I then just rebooted - and there was FF 2.0!

EDIT: Am I right in thinking that FF 2.0 will automatically update itself and offer to download any other available updates? I ask because the 'Check For Updates' option under 'Help' is greyed out.

Firefox will not update itself because normal users do not have privileges to do so. This is a good thing, that's why you don't get spyware every time you turn around! :) If you add a repository which keeps up to date on Firefox, your system will update firefox along with the rest of the system. Otherwise, since your distro has stabalized on a single version of firefox, so you will only receive security updates via your package manager for that version of Firefox which came with your distro. Make sense?

A side note, I use an optimized build of Firefox called Swiftfox, which also has a deb packages available. Have you tried that?

Cheers, AT - that explains things.

I'll also check out Swiftfox, thanks.
