Hello all. Been a while since my last visit here when I built my last beast. However, the time has come to consider updating.

I want to use as many components from my last build as possible. Take a look on my computer in the profile. I do want to replace processor, Memory and Motherboard and also the case. I would also like to make my PC a little quiter than before. Too many fans!

My use is 40% internet, 50%games and 10% MS Office stuff. I've got £400GBP to spend - maybe a little more.

Processor, Motherboard and suitable memory - something AMD and 64bit. I had real problems getting the right memory sorted out last build for the Asus board. I don't want overclocking and want something that won't crash.

Case - I want it black and full tower. It's not going anywhere so weight isn't an issue.

Cooling, speed & quietness are the main considerations.

    Many thanks in advance.

Well, a few other things you should factor in (your plan is still do-able) is that AGP video cards are going the way of the dodo, due to the PCI Express interface which will eventually replace PCI, PCI-X, and AGP slots. Secondly, the power requirements of newer systems are higher, so unless you've got a good 480W or better unit, I would highly recommend replacing the unit you have. Having said that, here's what I came up with off eBuyer:

    Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 £69.92 inc VAT
    Athlon64 3000+ Retail £61.90 inc VAT
    OCZ 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 DDR kit £69.40 inc VAT
Albatron GeForce 6600GT PCIe £72.19 inc VAT
    Enermax EG565AX-VE £64.57 inc VAT
Antec Plusview II £45.25 inc VAT

    Total: £383.23 inc VAT

However, seeing as you have a Geforce 6800, you might simply upgrade to 1GB of RAM and change out your fans for a some Vantec Stealth ones.

To be blunt, if you're going to upgrade to an Athlon64, you're better off long-term by going with a PCIe-based graphics. Don't look at the motherboards with both PCIe and AGP, as the AGP slot is plugged into the PCI bus, and that will kill your performance. The sole exception would be a motherboard using a ULi chipset, since ULi has a chipset out natively supporting PCIe and AGP.

A CPU upgrade is nice, but if you're not willing to switch over to a PCIe-based A64 box, you're much better off upgrading to 1GB and going with low speed fans (or even watercooling) to cope with the sound.

    Thanks guys,

Went for an increase in RAM and a new case.

Stayed with 2 x 1Gb Corsair XMS3200C2 and a Coolermaster 830 Stacker. Much better cooling thanks to the 830 than my last one.
