Hi all: Ok - I think it's time to upgrade my Graphics card? Just wanted to get some advice from you guys first. I've got a 8800GTS fitted in my Striker Extreme at the moment. IT's a pretty good card still but I want to boost up the graphics side of things. So my stupid questions are: Can a PCI-E 1.0 motherboard support a PCI-E 2.0 graphics card? My guess is that I can just plug in a PCI-E 2.0 card but it will just run as a 1.0? I run the system builder version of Vista-64 Ultimate. Is that going to throw it's toys out of the pram if I change out the graphics card? If you were me - with a budget of around 200-250 Pounds Sterling, what would you do? As always, thanks in advance for your replies!
exacty a PCIe2 card will function in a PCIe1 slot because PCIe2 is backward compatible with PCIe1 but you are correct by saying that it will only operate at PCIe1 speed. to be techical, PCIe x1 was the slowest PCIe had 8 "lanes" to transfer data through and its speed was comparable to AGP the "x<number> denotes the number of lanes (obviosly you times the <number> by 8 to get the number of lanes BTW: PCIe3 is due to be released in about 2010, IMPOTANT: READ THIS
Thanks for the post, Donkey. I guess I'll just have to upgrade in 2 years time again to a whole new Mobo? The Striker has been not worth the hassle, although it's been working ok about 2 months after building the system. I should have followed Custom PC magazines 'Recommended' award list. :chk: I've been looking on-line and see that ATi's a bit ahead on speed and price at the moment. But being an nVidia guy now, I was thinking about getting a 9800 GTX+ type thing? Wise? Yea/Ney? Anyone know if they have seen one of those graphs showing various speeds of cards? My June 08 Custom PC is missing - I know there was some info in there although it's now out-of-date...
