Hi, new to the site, so excuse if this is a daft question. I have windows 98 & wanted to buy an mp3 player. trouble is the system requirements start at 98se. How do i go about upgrading to that?
go and purchase either a copy of Windows 98SE, or, better yet, go and get a copy of XP Pro/Home edition. Looks better, is better and has better driver capabilities and a whole lot more. Plus its probably the same price as a copy of 98SE would be as its getting to the stage where its being discontinued.
Right now you can still use the windows update feature of windows 98. If you update with all the patches and updates it offers you it will be the same as windows 98se. They plan to stop support to 98 very soon, they extended several times. when they finnally do you can still get the updates they made up to that point by searching for 98 support at the site. Before you upgrade to XP, what are your system specs...you may have enough for 98 but fall very short for XP.
thanx evo, do u know where i can get these update patches from? I was going to go along & see if i could get what waffle said, but i have to admit i , being a bit of a computer nerd, wasnt sure whether, as u say my specs would be suitable for xp. This is probably not what u mean, but i have a pentium 3, 450 at the mo, a bit of a dinosaur really. Anyway if u can help some more, i am not going 'shopping' till 2morra.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Depends on how much RAM you have. If you don't have at least 256MB, you may not find XP to run a bit sluggish. Honestly, I wouldn't spend any more money on what you have right now. XP also contains an activation bit, and you'll have to re-activate the OS when you go to new hardware...unless you have the corporate version.
Big B, can i ask then, as u say dont spend anymore money on what i have, my main prob is if i want to get my mp3 player (& i do want 1) the i-pods of this world only go off windows 98se onwards so i am kind of stuck. I will check out how much RAM i have in the meantime......i can actually do that!
The other thing is that there's always a chance, if you can hit up Windows Update, you might be able to get the system updated enough that you may be able to get it to work. I don't know how strict some of these requirements are, so there is a chance you could get it working under what you have. I'd at least try that, before I spend any money.
