when i plug in datacable for my w700 phone into any of the ports the computer starts to beep really fast and disconnects the mouse and keyboard, but the computer itself isnt frozen because i can still see the cursor changing shape. restarting with the cable inside will result in freeze during dos (before getting into windows)

I tried the cable on another computer and it worked fine, and my computer has already been using various usb components(camera, wireless adapter, webcam etc) without a problem.

I've searched the internet for hours but can't seem to find the solution, has anyone ever encountered this problem or know what beeping and freezing mean when plugging a usb cord into the computer?

DOS doesn't exist anymore the last release of DOS was 6.22 about 12 years ago

try scanning for spyware / malware & viruses

BTW: what antivirus software are you using ?

does the cursor move with the mouse & does the Num lock light change when you press the Num lock key, if neither change then your system is frozen

BTW: Avast is the best antivirus software (and it's free) & try scanning with Ad-Aware & spybot s & d

Edit: i forgot: Welcome to HWFs, you'll like it here, i know i do!

thanks for the welcome and reply, i have NOD32 as antivirus scanner and i do have spybot installed

when i plug in the usb cord, the computer starts beeping (similar to if you hold down to many keys on the keyboard but alot faster) and keyboard lights all go out, the keyboard is then nonresponsive. Same with my mouse, the light for its optical sensor goes out and it stops working, however i can still see my customized cursor animation changing shape between still and busy modes (not moving though), showing the computer itself is still running and not frozen

    and ideas?

[edit] ok i have just tested out. when i plug the cord in, the computer seems to have frozen, because the typing line stops flashing as well as the little flags under each of our forum names stops waving. HOWEVER, my animated cursor is still changing shapes etc?? (i have cursor xp installed)... beeping is still there and the lights of keyboard and mouse do go out and none of them works.

are the keyboard & mouse USB or PS/2 and are they wireless, what is the make and model of the keyboard & mouse, and i'll try searching net for possible problems

and can you try another known working USB - phone cable

Edit: if the Num lock key doesn't turn on / off the Num lock light & the cursor is not movable by the mouse then it's frozen, the cursor changing means nothing

Edit: are the connectors clean & not covered in crap

the keyboard is a generic IBM beige keyboard, it's a serial keyboard. Mouse would be Logitec MX518 usb mouse but i'm using it with a usb to serial adapter

I've tried on the datacable for my old z500a and it works fine, so does every other usb cable i have at home, only the datacable for my w700 causes this problem. and the phone isnt even plugged on the cable, just inserting the cable by itself freeze the computer and creates loud and fast beeps

connectors are clean, and this datacable is brand new.

    thanks!!

wow that's extremely weird. Firstly, usb 2.0 is backward compatible with earlier usb standards, isn't it?? And secondly, even if it's not, it shouldn't have any effect whatsoever if you just plug in the cable by itself, without any device sitting on the cable! I seriously would never imagine this is possible ... that's a bit creepy, actually. Wtf, why would just a cable do something like that to a computer?? the cable by itself doesn't even send any signals, right??

    I have no idea, dude

maybe that cable is just partly defective?

i know, that's why i found it extremely weird as well. the cable shouldnt make any difference plugged into the computer without connecting to any devices on the other end.

anyone else might be able to shed some light into this problem? this is very interesting indeed hah

    Hi there,

I only just came across this thread....

Just a long shot but it sounds like there's no actual data, software issues, sounds more physical, like there's a short when you are plugging the cable in, or some other electrical problem which is then causing the PC to lock up as a protective measure and issuing a beep code to warn the user.

Repeating beeps are linked to a bad power supply, fault with motherboard, or fault with keyboard.

Essentially the PC was telling you that whatever you just did it didn't like it...lol.

As DaRussiaMan said there could be a slight defect with the cable thats causing it to not earth correctly when you are plugging into that particular USB socket.

If I remember rightly I think there's some kind of difference between USB 2.0 and USB 1.0 in how electrical current is manipulated for data transfer, hence the different speeds, so this could explain why it seems to work in USB 1.0 but not in USB 2.0 i.e.if theres some kind of electrical/cabling issue with the cable connector.

Anyway doesn't really solve your problem.....sorry....try replacing the cable from the phone supplier.....

Awww man when I have it figured out I get down to kaz's post and she says it before me. It does sound like there is a short when you plug in this cable. Replacing the cable will more than likey fix the issue. That is if I gathered correctly that the USB port works just fine with other devices. If you have other device working in the same USB port then it is just an issue with the cable.
