just been asked by a friend who does a fair bit of video processing which cpu would be best. From my past knowledge its always seems to be Intel cpu's that are better for video, but would a single core cpu ie; a Pentium 4 650 LGA775 Prescott 3.4GHz be as good as a dual core Pentium 4 830 Dual Core "LGA775 Smithfield they are similar price,im just unsure which to go for or are AMD dual core cpu's as good (an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ Socket 939) is slightly more expensive
Intel's CPU's have alays been king at video processing tasks. But if the price is almost the same i recommend going for the Dual Core LGA775 CPU. AMD still is sweet company that makes sweet CPU's which is why i own one but are just not up to par to Intel on Video and Audio processing.
The P4 830 would be the best CPU for video processing and meaning dual core it will be able to handle other tasks too. The A64 X2s are better at general usage and games.
thanks for that guys another question this about motherboards, if i use a dual core cpu, is there a budget priced motherboard that anyone knows of. my friend doesn't play games (apart from solitaire maybe) graphics aren't a major concern and there is no need for overclocking. Onboard sound and SATA is fine. Most of the lower priced boards seem not to cater for dual cpu's
I'd look at something based off the i945P, as the i945 chipset and it's variants are the cheapest chipsets that support the dual-cores. The i955's do as well, but that's the high-end stuff. The selection is pretty small, but you can find some motherboards under $100 with the i945P chipset. There's SATA support, PCIe (x1 and x16 slots), DDR2 667 standard. ECS has a couple of boards that should be alright. Despite what their reputation has been, the ones I've run across have worked fine, and they seem to have been doing some work behind the scenes to improve quality control, so even some of the more skeptical sites out there have been giving the company high marks. Here's a short list of ATX-size i945P motherboards for $125 and under over at Newegg.
