Virus help

I am a novice when it comes to PC's but I need help and hope to get an answer to someone who knows what they are talking about! I have NTL netguard running on my home PC which recently detected the virus W32/Mydoom.A@mm. It is quarantined in a Norton quarantine file, even though I thought Norton had been deleted over a year ago when I installed NTL. I cannot delete the Norton files so does anyone know if I will be able to remove the virus from these files or are they ok to remain in quarantine?
 
AVG anti-virus 7x is quite good, and its free, just do a search for "AVG anti virus" in your fav search engine
 
NTL's security software is horrible - really bloated. I strongly recommend you ditch it.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Uninstall NTL Antivirus
Uninstall anything related to Norton Antivirus.

Hi thanks for help. I did run AVG free antivirus scan but it did not detect the virus which is in an old Norton quarantine file. As it is in quarantine, is it safe to leave alone would you know?

Many thanks for your help. I have run AVG and other anti virus programs but NTL is the first one to detect this virus. The Norton quarantine file is in a program file but is not in my list of add/remove programs, as I did delete Norton a few months back when I installed NTL, if that makes sense. I have also got Windows Defender but that did not pick it up. If I were ablt to delete Norton, would that get rid of the virus or should it be ok to leave alone in the quarantine file?
 
You've brought up a few points that I want to touch on.

A virus stored in quarantine is safe. The quarantine is a special folder where viruses cannot spread from. This special folder is normally deleted (along with any virus within the folder) when you unistall the antivirus software. But because Norton is..well...crap, it has obviously left it on your computer :confused:

As I said before, NTL software is horribily bloated and eats up system resources - badly. I doubt it will protect you when it comes to the crunch. If you want better system performance then I'd recommend you remove it.

AVG Free is OK but doesn't detect that many viruses. It's only got a few basic features so it's not very powerful.

Avast Antivirus is your best bet. It provides a Web Shield, P2P Shield, Instant Message Shield, On-Access Shield and Email Shield.
 
Whoops, I forgot to add:

Windows Defender does not protect against viruses. It is a tool for removing adware and spyware (hopefully before they install on your computer)

I forgot to ask what W32/Mydoom.A@mm is, whether its a virus, adware, spyware etc? Would you suggest it be ok to leave alone as long as its in quarantine?

Should be OK, but why would you want to leave it in quarantine?

I have just visited the AVAST site and after reading through the removal tool details, I think will give it a go. Only reason I would leave it in quarantine is if I could not remove it, and perhaps had to restore the operating system!:(
