First you need to back up everything to DVD or CD or what ever you like.
Do you mean your PC's operating system is on an external hard drive ?
    Or just your files?

Yea! you can put everything you want to keep on the external hard drive..
You will need a XP setup disk, BUT if that Pc came with Vista, You might have some problems getting all the right drivers to make it work right..

what do you mean with that?, isnt that simple like: download XP, put it in the external disk, reformat PC and then put XP in it?

I wish it was that EASY... If that will work for you then go for it.. BUT You might not be able to get your Video drivers/sound drivers/Network drivers to work.

The best thing to do ,is to Keep Vista, BUT fine tune it.. Or you could try and install XP,
But you will need to download all the Drivers for XP before hand..What is the make and model of the PC.??

Since it is not a Brand name computer like Dell or HP, You will need to get all the drivers for your Motherboard for XP ....You do not list your Motherboard..

Google it, and see if you can get Drivers for that motherboard for XP... You will need, Video / sound and Network drivers...If you can get them, then download them and burn to disk.. then try to install XP.. good luck..
