According to my web server's SMART daemon, the HDD's done for. It still works, thanks to a robust OS and a solid meta-journaled filesystem, but not for too long if the hardware errors are any indication. It was given to me with an 8gb Quantam Fireball already in it, so I used it just as it was without refurbishing it... big mistake. Now a lot of people use it, but it's in poor health. So, if anybody has an old but working HDD around they don't use anymore (preferrably >=8gb), I'd gladly take a donation!
Those old Quantum Fireballs are horrible. Lots of them are failing about now, partly due to age, partly due to fact the aren't very good. It's ashame you live in the states because i've got 4 20GB Western Digital HDDs just laying around
Yes, they are horrible HDD's anyway, even if they're working properly. D'oh! That would have been perfect, too. Oh well, thanks for the thought.
Whats hosted on that server? If you need a foolproof method of backing it up i would suggest you 1. Encrypt it heavily 2. Torrent it as "Windows NT Source code leak 08/2006" 3. Retrive it when you need it, as 100's of people will b downloading it But seriously, If your in serious need i can lend you some cash (through paypal) for no charge (i get payed weekly, and i have done a :swear: load of overtime this week). I get paid friday
Hahaha, nice. The site is already backed up on my primary file server, but my web server's HDD is deteriorating a little worse every day. Thanks a million times over for the generous offer, but I can definately get by on a low-end HDD if somebody has one they're not using. After all, there's not too much load on that server at all, since all it's hosting currently is literature. If not, I'll just have to slowly save up for one, since I'm barely scraping by financially (San Diego is an expensive place to live, unfortunately). For now, Linux is chugging away, even on that broken HDD. I suspect it'll still continue to function for a while before it becomes completely unusable. How long, that's the question.
I know what its like. My Seagate 40GB 6 year old HD died I think. I'll run a few tests to make sure, but I need a new HD for my parent's £1000 128mb RAM PC.
