Hi everyone I am not sure where the problem is so I thought I would pick you lot's brains. Right..... I have been with my ISP for a while now. I started with 500Kbps connection and then for some bizar reason my ISP has upgraded everyones connection to up to 2Mbps. I know lunatics hey? For no extra fee.... Now I am happy with the speeds as I really I should not complain about a free lunch. However, so far I only once tested the connection to just over 900Kbps (here - http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp). The rest of the time it is 500 or less. At the moment for example it is just over 200. Is there a simple way of checking that no programs are stealing bandwidth? Are there known processes which I can stop that are known bandwidth eaters? Thanks for your help!
Unless your system is being controlled remotely (aka hacked), there shouldn't be anything on your system which easts that much bandwidth. But if your ISP doesn't guarentee 90% of target bandwidth, it may just be a heavy load on the ISP and they can't provide your maximum bandwidth for you.
what is your target bandwidth? because i get like 70kbps if i'm lucky when downloading and i'm on 512kbps broadband...i know you never get the what they say the connection is but why is that?
Hi and thanks for the input. I spoke to my ISP and they suggested one or two things. At the moment things have seem to have got a bit better. They did tell me that they are getting repports of less than expected speeds and are looking into it. In the mean time I upgraded the modem driver and firmware and ran a test via the phone company, which returned an amazing 960Kbps result. I will have to wait and see how it pannes out... Thanks!
