What is overclocking and its benefits ?

Overclocking happens when you tweak parts to work faster than manufacturer specs say. That is, they may still work but manufacturer do not guarantee it.

Bad: more power consumption and heat, maybe parts broke faster

Overclocking is subjective to said application. A 3.4GHz chip overclocked to 4.7GHz isn't going to do much for you in Word. It can help in gaming, BUT that assumes your video card is CPU bottlenecked.
It's free speed in a sense, but it also requires a little bit of testing to ensure things are running fine. The CPU, motherboard and to an extent, RAM, all play a role. However, CPU cooling can also influence the results.
 
overclocking is essentially like fitting primitive turbo to your car, it'll make your PC run a little faster at processing, not necessary making programs or windows start faster, more your pc will be a bit more responsive and better fps in games. your pc components are already pushed to the max with reliability, overclocking will increase speed at the cost of reliability, that is it's more likely to crash.

a calculator can calculate in 50ms, overclocking will make it calculate at 37-45ms depending on how far you push it.
