It depends on a variety of factors such as what motherboard you have now and what you'd like to have in the future.
I think a reasonable upgrade is one based on CPU and RAM requirements. If you have a slow and outdated CPU and you'd like to buy a new CPU that just won't fit in your old board, then an upgrade is reasonable and worth the money. The same goes for RAM, but you shouldn't buy another board just because your board only supports up to 4gb of RAM and you want 8gb.

So my advice, if you have a bunch of features you'd like to have in the future such as extra RAM slots, extra PCI-e slots, USB 3.0 ports and such... an upgrade is reasonable. A board upgrade for CPU support is always reasonable. On average, i think an upgrade every 3 years is reasonable.

Things you want to look for if you decide to upgrade: USB 3.0 ports, at least 1 PCI-e 16x port, latest AMD socket (since you're looking for an AMD CPU), DDR3 support, built-in heatsinks on the southbridge and northbridge, anything else i'm missing?
