Note that I hardly ever visit gaming sites/forums so I don't know what must have already been a "settled" matter. And so I ask here. Also, I'd like to think those that vote would've played the original HL first, instead of those (quite a few, I imagine) that played HL2 before they played the original. I think this kind of makes sense and makes for a better poll (correct me if I'm wrong).
To me, nothing can replace the hours spent playing HL & CS during lunch breaks... it really did bring a group of people together, making new friends (with other pupils and the teachers that volunteered there rooms). But then again, how can i forget the hours i spent playing CSS at home on the net? (or even death match, gary's mod etc). There as good as each other, in different ways... you can play HL on just about any computer anywhere (and the graphics where stunning at its time) but HL2 has much better graphics and a bunch of new toys!
Half-Life, IMO was better. It was one of the first FPS games I got into, so that could be why, but it was an FPS that wasn't strictly run 'n gun. HL2's Source engine is revolutionary, but it felt disjointed in the flow and some things could've been shortened (the boat ride?). What I did like about HL2 was that they introduced the gravity gun and you actually made use out of it. All too often, FPS games have the tendency to introduce a lot of weaponry, but there's just a few that you actually make good use of, even if there's some super uber weapon. HL2 and HL are really two very different games in terms of layout and play. Both I've spent more time than is probably healthy...but it still doesn't compare to the countless hours I've wasted playing Unreal Tournament (the original).
The original Half life was better, together with opposing force and the multiplayer Team Fortress was really my first taste of an amazing online player. Many hours spent being an engineer in the flag room or a scout going balls out for the flag.
The actual game play, cant be beaten w/ HL, pluse the original cs is the most true fps ever!!! as apposed to HL2 w/ its amazing graphics (i actually do enjoy half-life 2 more than the original b/c of the graphics) but then again cs:s lacks as far is online FPS is conserned. To me it is jus missing something, i havnt figured it out but something just isnt there. My favorite game of all time that i do play religously is cs 1.6 found in the original HL.
