Acer seems pretty safe, they're not known for being amazing in any way but I wouldn't be worried about their products either. I'd prefer a Sony, Toshiba, or IMB but whatever your budget can afford makes sense I guess. What do you plan on using it for?

using mostly just for internet and a few dtp applications nothing heavy really plus my son plays his games on it as well...certain games seemed a bit slow on the packard bell such as need for speed underground and the hulk but in the main it seemed adequate for my needs.....what spec would you suggest.....

Looks like you're talking about a fairly mid range laptop. So'd I'd say look for something along the lines of either a Sempron 2500+ to 3100+/ Turion 1.6-2.0GHz (probably out of the price range though). Or a Celeron M/Pentium M no lower than 1.2Ghz. Both should have at 512Mb's or ram or the option to add an extra 256MB and it would be nice to have a video card of some sort as well. Most anything will be better than integrated graphics so anything from a Radeon 9000 or GeForce 4MX to a Radeon X700 or Geforce 6600 will be great. Realistically you'll probably have the most luck finding something with an intel media accelorator 900 or 950 which will be okay.
    Good luck.
