I want to change the cpu in my computer with faster one.
I have AMD Athlon XP Palomino, socket 462, 1666,7 Mhz, bus speed 133,3, fsb 266,7,
    mainboard:Model KT333-8235, VIA, KT266/333,
Bios: Phoenix technologies, LTD, version 6.00 PG

I know it's old, but it's still ok. Which cpu should be ok? Which characteristics must have?

    tnx

    Hi,

If you are going to keep everything the same and just upgrade the processor, the main things you need to be concerned with are the socket type of the processor and also the compatability with your motherboard. The socket type needs to be the same because generally motherboards can only fit a certain type of processor (the pins on the processor are in a specific configuration for each socket type, so different socket types are generally not interchangeable).

Socket type 462 which you have at the moment is also called Socket A. So to start, search on the internet for CPU's that are Socket A or 462 because they are the same socket type. Once you find one that you like, check in your motherboard manual or look it up on line from the manufacturer's website to verify that the processor you want is compatable with your motherboard.

This site will give you a little bit more information about Socket A processor's. In one of the author's responses to what the fastest Socket A processor is, he said that it is the Athlon XP 3200+. If you decide on that one, check with the manual for your mother board to be sure it is in the compatability list (some motherboards cannot support some CPU's because of limitations to their BIOS or other hardware reasons even if the socket type is correct).
