Everytime I go to buy new hardware something newer/cheaper comes out with in weeks of that purchase. Direct X 10 is upon us and it's time for me to upgrade. I bought an AMD 3200+ socket 939 pretty much at the time they were released. Very shortly after, AMD switched to socket 940 and shortly after that again they switched to Socket AM2. What I need to know, before I buy, is will AMD be switching there socket right after I buy an AM2 Proc. and accomidating motherboard? I've looked at their websight and see nothing to indicate a Socket change but that means little if they want to keep it a secret for some reason. Please help! GEXY1
AM2+ is a minor update. Now, assuming I remember correctly, you can use AM2+ on AM2 and vise versa. However, there are a few motherboards coming out with AM2+ sockets. AM2+ allows for split plane voltages between the actual processor and the northbridge, as the Athlon64 design integrates much of the northbridge into the CPU itself. AMD will be dropping the Athlon branding in favor of Phenom X2 (dual core) and Phenom X4 (quad core) for their premier desktop processor line. There's some info in this article at Anandtech.
wait for the new 790 chipsets they'll got a newer socket type also supporting the older ones but not being a 940 (am2) socket, they'll be for k10 cpu's, the long awaited barcelona it's gonna be a real madrid vs. barcelona match as the design engineer of penryn is spanish
