Hi, Will Kingston Value RAM (KVR533D2/1GR) work with my Compaq Presario S4000Z? I got it on sale so I'm hoping it will. Thanks for the help, Nathan
No. That unit uses DDR. DDR modules are 184-pin and run at 2.5-2.6V. DDR2 modules are 240-pin and run at 1.8V. You cannot fit one in the other type slot without damaging the module or motherboard, possibly both.
Thank you for replying! I was just about to open up the RAM and install it So I guess I should return this RAM and get the DDR RAM? Will any DDR RAM work with my computer, or does it have to be a certain speed or something? I appreciate your help, Nathan
As long as it's the same speed or faster than your current RAM, it will work fine. RAM is rated by it's maximum speed, and will run fine at speeds slower than that. It's much like a tire rated for 150MPH: it will work fine at 40MPH. Most RAM out there today is PC3200 (DDR400), which works fine. It looks like the system is outfitted with PC2100 (DDR266), but you may end up paying more for the slower stuff. Usually Kingston is pretty safe, so I'd just stick with that. If you run across it, you might give SuperTalent a shot. If you're really worried, Crucial has a memory configuration tool. It will be a pricier option, but they guarantee it to work. I'll vouch for their tech and phone support being both competent and friendly.
