I can't seem to run NFS 3 and 4 on my O.S. It gives an error that win98 or 95 is required. Can this problem be solved?
1)Format. 2)Add Linux. :good: Seriously though, my advice if you want to run both SMB (NetBIOS) and NFS services on the same box, there isn't really much reason to use an expensive, insecure and relatively unstable Windows box at all. Linux of course does NFS natively, and it amazingly handles SMB better than an actual Windows server! No, really. I'm actually Microsoft certified, and I deploy SMB servers all the time. They have so many less problems, the clients typically don't even know it's there, or that it's not Windows. In fact, they don't think about it at all, because it just works. A Linux box doesn't even need to be rebooted after major patching, unless the kernel itself is to be updated. If on the other hand, you're working for a company who is locked into a proprietary software agreement, (i.e. you must run Windows on the server), you'll need the Services For Unix package from Microsoft. However, you will basically be missing out on the security and stability that make Unix services so worthwhile in the first place. But it'll work! -AT
I didn't mean that but anyway I am will soon install either UNIX or Linux along with windows on my PC. I have second hard drive installed about 1 GB. Is it possible to install UNIX or linux on the second hard drive. Actually my big bro is a Unix/Solaris admin. and his suggestion is to get into this stuff.
Come to think of it,... there were many such instances. When I dowloaded trial versions of NAV and PC-Cillin they would run either say that it can't run on a server.
yep, since its a server version, its not ment for games etc but for server applications like FTP server etc
Hahaha, since you're running 2000 Advanced Server, by saying "NFS" I assumed you meant "Network File System", the Unix/Linux/BSD networking protocol! Whoops... :swt:
Check NT Compatible and look under their compatibility section. It's a pretty big database too, so chances are you'll find it. Again, since this is a server OS, I dunno why you want to do gaming on it.
Well the only O.S I currently have are: 1) Windows XP Home 2) Windows 2000 Advanced Server 3) Windows 98 Now windows 98 would be good but after installing in the drivers for every external device I have, it very soon starts giving a lot of errors. As for XP, I am not sure my PIII 1GHz would be able to handle the O.S along with the games. The error is only for NSF, rest of the games are running fine. Ex. 1) Deus Ex 2) Deus Ex: Invisible War 3) NOLF 4) NeverWinterNights 5) etc,....
Well, in all fairness, the only differences between 2000 Pro (NT5), 2000 Server (NT5), and 2000 Advanced Server (also NT5), are the extra services (which can be disabled), and of course the licensing. I'd be willing to bet that with all of the server-specific daemons disabled, it'd still get more FPS in games than XP...
I have no Windows machines at home, so this is approximate! Click Start then Settings then Control Panel. Double-click in Administrative Tools then double click Services. Scroll down and highlight the service you wish to disable (see descriptions of each). Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. Click the Stop button. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar then click OK. If you kill something that you needed for normal operation, you can always re-enable it later, so no sweat. Also, you should disable the messenger service if you're not on a corperate network. -AT
