    Hi there,

whenever I boot my PC up it loads Windowns 98 successfully but after the desktop appears my PC basically hangs and it is impossible for me to access any of the desktop icons or even the bottom toolbar for that matter, even though the mouse is still active. When I press Control-Alt-Delete I gain the message that Explorer is not responding. I have tried using a boot disk to solve the problem and also tried booting my PC using the Windows CD Rom but all to no avail. Any help would be gratefully received! G

Have you tried starting explorer as a new task from the task manager?
ie control-alt-delete, file, new task (or run) then type explorer.

Might be slightly different, not used 9x for ages.

Probably wont make much of a difference but its worth a try to see where your at.

right boot up in safe mode and run scandisk and defrag, if that doesn't work download this and go into control panel and dbl clck startup and disable anythning that shouldn't be there (take the tick out of the box) alternativly it could be spyware download this that should keep you busy for a while

after ending explorer in 98 you can reinvoke it by pressing <windows button> + E

    Hi there,

thanks for the advice, I have tried your suggestions but the problem I am having is I can't access any of the Control Panel options to run scandisk or indeed any of the Start Menu programs/desktop icons as my pc freezes as soon as it boots up, even in Safe Mode. As it is impossible for me at the moment to access any of these functions on my PC when starting up I therefore cannot invoke or run any programs to help fix the problem - talk about chicken and egg scenario! Any other advice would be gratefully received, G

well if thats the case, run scandisk and defrag from the DOS mode command prompt, press F8 at POST and select DOS only then run scandisk & defrag

EDIT: when you CTRL - ALT - DEL (when booted into normal mode) does the task manager pop-up (maybe not straight away maybe after 5 - 10 seconds)

what tasks are running in task manager ?

i meant after Ctrl - Alt - Del and ending explorer you can restart explorer by pressing <windows button> + E

EDIT: could you also please attatch copy of the: Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Win.ini & system.ini

The only task that is running in Task Manager is Explorer and the system says that it is not responding. I will try your suggestion, finger crossed! Thanks in advance, G

hmm i had a problem similar to this a while back on my 98 machine, but i could still boot in safe mode. Have you recently installed any new USB devices? If you have try rremoving them and then try to boot. My Win98 machine did not like USB at all. I plugged in a USB mouse and the whole computer went to hell.
