Windows Reading Problems?

hey all, i have a new 60GB Excelsor HDD 7200rpm 2mb cache on my brothers pc i built him, i always like to keep a clean system and dont like loads of things being loaded at once.. now the 60GB hdd is recognised as a 57.9GB

S.M.A.R.T is enabled and the hdd runs perfectly and its a brilliant part for the price i paid (£30 including delivery)

but in Windows XP Pro C Drive "says" it has take up : 13.1GB (fair enough)
but when looking at the system, it has only actually taken up 6.20GB.

CTRL + A in C Drive (including all hidden files) right click - properties it states that the size of the files selected comes to: "6.20GB"

i have no idea what is going on at all, this had happened before on an old pc, and i scan disk the pc and it was fine afterwards, i have scan disked and nothing has happened. 13.1GB is fine.. so is 6.20GB infact 40GB being used is fine, as long as the PC is reading it correctly.

any suggestions?
 
right i've just got home.. i turned on my pc.. and the computer is now reporting that i have used 32.7GB/57.9GB - i then goto C drive.. select all including hidden files and everything comes to 6.20GB.

i disabled system restore.. what the f*ck is going on?
 
Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Cleanup

Try cleaning up all the idle files laying around. Let me know how that works out...
 
try running scan disk. it usualy fixes the incorrectly reported HD space?
do as Anti has suggested in the next post :)

There are two types of hidden files in Windows: hidden files, and system files. By default both are not visible to users. The System Restore backup file would be considered a system file, and you would not be able to see or select it until you changed your preferences to show system files as well.
