Last night I could hear clicking coming from my PC which I assumed was my hard drive so I just decidedto restart. Then after it had checked for RAM etc I got a white bar across the screen at the bottom (I usually get this just before the windows xp logo with the loading bar comes on) When the white bar filed up the pc just wouldnt boot any furthur. So i restarted and booted in safe mode with no probs. Im in safe mode now...any ideas?

Okay, so your computer boots into Safe Mode only? Well that tells me that your computer has a driver issue. Have you installed, upgraded or re-installed any drivers recently?

On a side note, to check your hard drive is in good working order, go into a command prompt and type:

    chkdsk /f

Repair install windows. You're gonna have to do it, and the "it might not be windows" excuse is not going to cut it. Unless you want to be sure that its not windows boot with a linux live CD, try doing things and see if you have any problems. If not, then find your XP cd. (or switching to linux would also be good, but thats not going to happen).

So Im assuming its a hard rive error which im aslo assuming i cant fix with or without scan disk. Which leaves me with the question is it possible to get files/folders off that hard drive?

Have you tried the chkdsk /f command yet?

In regards to your data, have you partitioned your hard drive? If your personal files are on a different partition to your Windows directory then you could easily transfer them.

I have partitioned my HD mega and I tried chckdik but it would let me run it because the hard drive was in use and it didnt go far enough into the boot to check it. Ive just took my 300gb har drive out and my pcs booted :O. Luckily this hard drive is still under warranty as I only bout it a matter of months ago. Shame Ill lose 300gb of data but at least my pcs workin again :)
