Windows XP 64-bit lacks anti-virus support from major vendors such as McAfee and Symantec.

Consumers using the newly released Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition have yet another thing to worry about - no major antivirus coverage.

In this case, two major antivirus companies, Symantec and McAfee, do not offer 64bit support for their programs. Norton Internet Security 2005 jumps right out and tells you it does not support 64bit. "Symantec currently does not sell any consumer products that are certified to be compatible with 64-bit processors and operating systems." However, Symantec has mentioned that they will be looking towards the adoption of x64 but for now, virus protection on x64 was not yet available.

The company said its Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0 will eventually support Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions, but no timeline for full support was given.
