Hi to all, this is my first posting so please bear with me.

I tried upgrading from Windows ME to XP and had some problems when installing from my XP disk. Every time the Install got to 11% it stopped and a message saying "unable to copy driver.cab file" I was advised this could be a bios problem! I have since invested in a new Motherboard (Gigabyte GA-M61PM-S2) WITH A AMD Sempron AM2 3200 socket AM2 Pro CPU. 1Gig DDR2 (Corsair Value Select pc5400 memory kit (2x512)mb and a 80 GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus20 SATA 11 300 hard disk drive 7200rpm 8mb cache. So all new gear here with the latest bios. Problem is still having problem with clean Install i.e. gets to 11% and the same message appears "setup cannot copy the file driver.cab" retry=enter-skip or f3 to quit. If I try another XP disk I get a "ntldr is missing" I have tried formating and Instaling many times now but get the same message. I have tried cleaning my disk which appears to be in as new condition and have as I say tried a another (freinds) disk.

Any advice would be great as I am now totally confused and frustrated.

    Cheers,

    John

    Welcome to HWF
it is possible, is your HDD settings correct in the BIOS, some people do have problem upgrading to XP if their current file system is FAT32, can you enter the recovery console when booting your XP CD (repair)
how are you trying to install XP (presumably you are booting the XP CD, have you tried allow the XP CD create a new NTFS partition and possibly delete your FAT32 partition (if you want to keep some data, you could resize your FAT32 partition enough to allow the XP CD to create an NTFS filesystem (i would suggest about 5Gb NTFS partition for XP)

Is it a genuine disc or a copy? Sounds like it's a dodgy copy that went wrong.

Not sure why it's brining up 'ntldr is missing'. Make sure your new motherboard is set to boot from CD rather than Hard Drive. This can be done in the BIOS settings.

Booting from a genuine XP disk which I have used previously with no problems.
formatted and partition using the full disk space NTFS. I can enter the repair/recovery option when asked for while booting from the cd. NTLDR (LOADER) only appears when using another XP disk. This problem is on the new mobo etc so not an upgrade. It should be a new/clean Install of XP using NTFS on a new hdd.
