when your friends pc is turned on does it display any error messages or does it just hang (probably after POST test)

i would probably start in the recovery console with commands like: fixboot, bootcfg /rebuild and see where that gets me but there will probably be an error message like hal.dll needs to be reinstalled

The description is not very clear.
Exactly what is happening when the computer turns on?

When the computer starts, try to press F8.
Do you get the various starting options, such as 'Start Windows normaly' or 'Safe Mode'?

If you can do this, can you styart in safe mode?
