Wireless connection but no internet

A friend is using a Belkin wireless G router and can connect fine on the main desktop pc but the laptop doesn't seem to want to work. It connects to the network fine but still can't browse the internet or do anything else. We've tried using the laptop on my network at home and also at college and again, it connects but there is no actual internet access.
Any ideas of what we can do?

Manually setting up a network connection in Windows 2000 or XP

The windows network wizard is worthless if anythings wrong, also, if your trying to use the laptop at college its likely you will have to set a proxy server too.

How would you find out what the "Preferred DNS Server" is? Also how do you know what the DNS and WINS is?
