how do, i've just bought a netgear wireless moosic server mp101 and a netgearwg311 wireless card. it is not working, is this because i need a router to sift my ip addresses, im on aol broadband? and im also extremly stoopid. can anyone help as i have now pulled all me hair out and my wife says i look daft with a bald head!!!
I'm assuming you are on Windows XP? Its a lot easier wit XP/SP2. You do not need a wireless card, if you have an available ethernet port on the PC and the router. Simply plug the included ethernet cable and RJ45 (phone line) into the router, turn it on, and open up your browser and go to your routers config page. Usually it is 192.168.0.1 - it will be in the instructions. Also note that AOL is a complete bitch to network, and it really, really is tough to get it to work. Sorry to sound discouraging, but thats the truth I'm afraid. . (Or in my *limited*experience helping friends network PC's on AOL anyway)
now then waffle, i am on xp sp2, but netgear have their own config program so windows wont touch it. i was told that the card will not work trying to link with th music server as aol have a fixed ip, do you know this to be true? i tried linking music server direct to the comp with an ethernet but still wouldnt work!!! just reluctant to spend another lot on a router if im gonna have the same hair pulling problems!!
Forget about linking to the "music server" for now. Have you connected it up properly, as shown in the manual? If so, there should be several green lighs on your router, and one of those will indicate if the ethernet is working. If ethernet is ok, then you have to go to the aforementioned IP address, and enter your connection details such as username and password. I do not know what the address is as it varies from router to router, but it is usually 192.168.0.1 So go into internet explorer, and type that address in. If its the right one (or whatever the address is, lookin in the instructions), then you will need to enter a username and password, then a page will load up and you will be able to configure your router to work with the internet.
Once your inside the router configuration you should be able to give your music server a fixed IP address. On the network it should be something like 192.168.1.101, if you need access to it from outside of the network you can set it up in the DMZ and just pointing to your AOL IP address will get you access to it.
