hello, ma (again) with the same old problem with the grx driver

but this time i actually removed "nvidia-source-common" then dropped to run level 1 and ran the driver after many typos, & this time i saw the lines of (.) full stops / periods and then a blank screen, so, i thought it must have installed, so, i rebooted but
Code:
glxinfo | grep render
gave this output:
Code:
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
firstly is there some kind setting finder for *nix that will search or index all the files and what settings are for, cos, it i very hard remembering the location of everything i very difficult, i've tried Stringi and Kerry Beadle and neither have retuned anything - oh and i'm using the update kernel dated today on Gutsy

BTW: i don't like it when i can't do something, and where do you turn verbose on - so, i can finally get it working, sorry to be a pain in everyone's ass, TIA

Edit: this is the furthest i've ever got

it's probably a right mess with how much i've messed with it

thank you AT i would like to get it working without bang my head against this bl00dy wall

Well, I can see that your xorg.conf is using the nv driver, which is the open-source version with no 3D support, not the proprietary NVidia one. You can change the xorg.conf manually to reflect the correct driver, 'nvidia', but I have the feeling the driver might not have been built correctly in the first place. Try this, and see if you get any errors:
Code:
sudo modprobe nvidia
If it loads without errors (it will simply return you to the command like with no messages), you likely built the driver correctly. If not, well, time to try again, and be careful not to typo. :)

Code:
sudo modprobe nvidia
returned:
Code:
Not loading nvidia module; not used in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

OK, try replacing all instances of nv in your xorg.conf to nvidia, then restart the X server. I know you have problems reaching some key combinations, but it's Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. Otherwise, it's probably best to just change the xorg.confg and reboot, MS-style. :) If it doesn't work, change it back to nv.

well replacing nv with nvidia just disabled GUI mode, as login was in text mode & startx resulted in a kernel panic, & as i'm paranoid i backed up my xorg, so, restoring GUI mode was not a problem

BTW: obviously i still have the xorg the kernel panicked with

Edit: changed to backup xorg that enables GUI mode
