I've got an Acer Travelmate 8204 laptop. At maximum brightness, the screen is still a bit dimmed. It appears that this is set by Acer. Is there any way to increase the brightness of the screen beyond the stock settings?

some laptops have a special function key and this can be used in conjunction with other keys to increase the brightness. Look for the keys on the keyboard that represent the brightness control. Although less likely, you may find some functions in the CMOS setup.

There may be a few Windows programs that can control the brightness although I don't know of any

The CMOS setup doesn't have brightness features. And I set the brightness to the highest point with the brightness controls on the keyboard. But the screen is still a bit dimmed.

Then you've reached the maximum brightness you can acheive with that screen. If it's really dimm it may be that the screen is faulty. I am no expert in this field though so I wouldn't like to say for sure.
