Had a system shut down last week (winxp) when I rebooted many drivers were corrupted. I uninstalled all bad drivers, rebooted, and plug n' play reinstalled all drivers. Everything works except my sound. It shows sound being enabled in the device manager. One window I get in device manager says sound card is enabled. but has not been started. I thought I blew the onboard sound card, so bought a cheap new one. It shows up the same way. Says audio is enabled, but has not been started...Anybody ever run into this problem...Luthfi

Hmmm. you can try re-installing DirectX for starters.
Also can try installing the sound card in a different PCI slot!

Make sure the correct sound card drivers are reinstaled. You'll find them on your manufacturers site.
