I was bored, so i was just looking around on Google maps, and man are the roads messed up in the UK, like seriously, how do you guys get from place to place??
Why do you think we make the best navigators/map readers! Plus a love for GPS systems is relieving the problem
The roads here don't always go in square blocks, they tend to be more curved. Still, doesn't make it any harder to navigate though.
Well first off, i don't really know how your road system works, as we have interstates(freeways, no stop signs, higher speeds) and then highways which are pretty much regular roads, only they are more direct and might have fewer stops than regular roads. Yeah, square roads are real boring, but i was just looking and there aren't really any straight roads even, and in bigger cites its like a maze, on that, London is nuts.
Most Americans find the concept of a 'roundabout' confusing... In my hometown we have a really cool one: Magic Roundabout (Hemel Hempstead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
People in the UK drive on the left side of the road With the roads around here it is easy to drive from one place to another. But there are places like Amsterdam and Rotterdam where you get lost very easily.
Lots of people I know who've come to visit in the past have avoided that part of town in fear of the roundabout... It can be pretty crazy if you don't know what you're doing. I myself don't drive yet so I just leave it to others
I can't say I've ever noticed to be honest that the roads aren't straight. I don't know exactly how the road systems work, but there are motorways (eg the M1), which are the biggest roads with 3 lanes. Then there are dual carriageways which are 2 lanes wide. There are single lane roads aswell (I think they are called A roads or B roads). Also, I'm not sure why we drive on the left when everyone else drives on the right! I wonder why Americans spell things differently to us, but then claim to speak English? Surely it's not English to spell colour 'color', or centre 'center'? I can't wait to be able to go to America when I'm older, apart from the gun crime (which is coming over here now anyway), it sounds brilliant! Edit: Also, why is petrol / diesel called 'gas' when it's a liquid????!!!
Some words in British English sound funny. Like, why do you pronounce the word 'lever' like 'leaver'? And why is 'plant' pronounced with an 'A' instead of an 'E'?
Why is British English funny? It's our language... so why is it weird for us to pronounce things differently? Surely other people speaking it differently are the one's pronouncing things wrong? Plant with an 'E'?? Now that's just plain strange.
British is the 'real' english (if I'm right). But I'm used to the american accent. So the other accents sound strange to me.
Because if it was pronounced with an 'E' then it would be spelt Plent? Gasoline... oh yeah I know we do pronounce some words weirdly, just what I can't remember right now but my French teacher once pointed a load out.
Wow, that all got off topic quick, but that said, i think it has something to do with a previous King or Queen , i might be completely wrong, but i think that might be the reason for the pronunciation of some things. That and i remember hearing it being called the Queen's English??? About Language, its really up to phonetics, like the here in the states people in the south have an accent as well (and generally i think its considered to not be phonetically correct, like yant to, which should be want to) Anyways, certain letters have certain sounds so they should be pronounced a specific way, thats pretty much it.
Also, keep in mind that the US has been independent of the UK for over 200 years, and our American English has changed with that gap. Even Canada and Australia have their own accents ("It's aboot time" "G'day, mate"). You silly wankers should know that.
When I watch a tv channel from the UK, I can't stop laughing at some words. I personally like American english much more. But there is something I like about the UK. They don't have a president that is sending troops to Iraq to get oil
No... we just had a prime minister that was George Dubbya's number 1 all time fan, did you not notice British troops doing all the same thing the Americans were? This post made me think of this for .... some reason ^_^
oh man that's just so hilarious :chk: Yeah Toni Blair did stupid stuff as well. [ot]Still not as bad as our queen. The VAT has increased by a percent because she want to redecorate both here palaces BTW: Our prime minster looks like Harry Potter [/ot]
Hey, i kinda liked Tony Blair, not sure why, he reminded me of James Bond. But yeah, i to like the way the British pronounce or refer to certain things, like in America a two door car is pronounced "coop" (coupe) but in England its pronounced likes its spelled "coopay"
