    Hey HWF,

Just wanted to let everyone know I'll likely be out of the loop a bit for the next several weeks at least, since it seems I'm relocating from the San Diego region of Southern California to the south bay of San Francisco. For those who don't know/care much about American geography, let me illustrate:

from: San Diego to: Sunnyvale - Google Maps

So anyway, it'll be quite an endeavor, and I'm not sure exactly when I'll be able to get back into the game. But you'll be in my thoughts, and I'll try to check in whenever I have the chance! I mean, it's Silicon Valley, it's not like I'll be far from a good Internet connection. :chk:

sh1t, i knew AT was good, but, i didn't realize you were at the forefront of everything IT, & i've had god (AT) helping me, i nearly don't have the b4lls to even talk to AT let alone ask you for a favor

because [IMG] i'm just a plank with 1 system at home, & not worthy to even talk to you[ot]as if[/ot]

    AT [IMG]

BTW: big respect to AT, this post wasn't intended to give AT a big head, but rather to show AT the respect he knows he deserves

Ehhhh... :O I'm not all that. Getting a tech job in Silicon Valley is like getting a job as a lumberjack in British Columbia. To be honest, I looked for something decent in San Diego for a while before I started considering jobs in the bay, since I have family here. But the tech industry is dust and bones in San Diego, since there aren't really any top-grade data centers here (unless you're the military).

In the valley, there are a lot of good tech jobs, so I actually got to take my time and choose one that's a really great fit. The one I accepted is a smallish company with a solid product and a friendly atmosphere, so I'm actually really looking forward to it. The only downside is the move (~500mi!) and the guilt trip from the parents for stealing away their granddaughter. :x:

well, lets agree to differ on that point[ot]because we both know differently[/ot]
you did right, a comfortable work environment is more important than most people think
i would have though there would be
if you don't mind me asking, what do they do ?
    :good:
tw4ts[ot]don't tell them i said that, unless your parents are like mine & v easy going[/ot]but it isn't like your banning them from visiting

BTW: your parents will soon get over it, especially when they see how happy you are

Out of respect to them, I'll wait to spill the beans until I sign the employment contracts. :)
Nah, the "guilt trip" is just an expression really; they are supporting my decision to relocate. It's just a difficult thing, since my mom and my daughter get along wonderfully. I wish I'd had grandparents that good!

    no problem
my parents would jokingly say their sending me on a guilt trip, but wouldn't actually do it, at least i don't think they would.

Thanks snipe. :) Looks like I'm flying out in a couple of days to get up to speed on the operation and look at a few places, then flying back down on the weekend. These guys are great; they've even arranged for me to telecommute while I'm relocating to make it easy on me. Makes me really feel I've made the right decision.

OK, so I went down to Silicon Valley for a few days to meet the team and get a few days of knowledge exchange before the other systems guy went on vacation. We were out to lunch when somebody broke out the window of his car and ripped off my laptop. :( The worst part is it was in a busy parking center in the middle of Sunnyvale (not a bad neighborhood), in broad daylight! It was only a minor inconvenience though, as my employer hooked me up with a MacBook w/Leopard to replace it. They also paid to replace the other engineers window... even though we were just out to lunch! So, I'm very optimistic, since it seems this company really knows how to treat its employees.

BTW, I've signed all the paperwork, so you might as well know the company is Evernote. A great place to work, apparently.

Wow, that's great. I'd love a MacBook. So far so good from the employers.

I'm relocated to Sunnyvale, writing this from my own network once again. My firewall had unfortunately not survived the trip (old K6-2 @400MHz), but Evernote hooked me up with an old Dual-P3 box to replace it, so all is well.

It will probably be another week or so before I'm totally settled in, but so far so good. Oh and yes, that means my servers are back up now. :)

Hey AT, well done and good luck for the move. Hope it all works out for you and the family.

If I am not mistaking, a family member lived in Sunnyvale for a while (my step dad's son....) and liked it very much. Partly because it was awash with Israelies.... hehe. :x:

    Mind the mediterranean buggers! Hahaha....

Maybe I can move there. Seems like a small price to pay for a MacBook! :chk:

Sunnyvale has... everybody. Indians, Pakistanis, Hebrews, Europeans, Persians, Russians, Koreans, Vietnamese, Japanese, etc. :p You name it, they're represented here.

Ah that's cool, congrats on the new job and on the move. I haven't been to sunnyvale or SF, but I've been to San Jose. And I loved it!

Thanks! Yeah, I was born in Santa Clara, which is the city directly between Sunnyvale and San Jose. It's actually nice to be back; I always liked the valley. If anybody finds themselves in the area, look me up. I'll buy you a beer. :D
