No secret that I have recently passed the major milestone of 40.
Recently, after battling for ages with laziness, I started jogging. I manage about 30 minutes now at about 5 to 5.5 Mph every other day. My fruit intake has doubled if not quadrupled although I have still got major issues with vegetables. I try to get a minimum of 6 hours of sleep every night and I have not seen a drop of alcohol in absolute ages (not out of choice, mind...). I try to cycle to work as much as possible and generally eat as healthily as I can.

So what do you do? Cycle to work? Go to the gym? play sumfink?

Any tips for the 'over the hill' folk?

I'd love to go back to play basketball but nothing around my area....

I've got an apartment in Silicon Valley, so not a lot of options like street basketball, etc. In my case I bought an inexpensive Weider MAX since it has a small footprint and I can get a freeweight-like workout from it. To balance out the strength training, I do yoga and aerobics on the Wii Fit, which is surprisingly good. I'd recommend it.

In fact, my mom has lupus, and can't be out in the sun. She's also on steroids for her condition, which causes weight gain. I suggested she get a Wii Fit, which she did. She's been using it for about a month, has lost 16lbs so far, and feels better for it already.

Yeah, heard about this one... We do have the Wii but the fit bit is a bit expensive... which is one of the reasons I jog rather than going to the gym (expense that is... ;))... Preferably I would swim as it is probably the best low impact sport for cardio and muscle building. Unfortunately, that too cost quite a bit if you wish to do it regularly...

Really though, seems like your pretty much doing what anyone should be, however, some form of resistance training would be a good idea. Strengthening muscles goes a really long way to help support your bones and joints.

Diet as a whole plays a huge role in overall health, proper vitamin/mineral intake is very important, but if you still eat a lot of unhealthy fats or preservatives, etc then your just offsetting all the good your doing. (not saying that you are consuming such things)

    wow, no kidding, thats intense.

As for me, i just try to eat as health as possible, try to keep a regular sleep schedule, try to stay as stress free as possible... although i do really poorly there, weight train with free weight, and run.. i do poorly their to though... For caloric intake, i just try to proportion, if i'm not very active in any given day, then i don't eat as much, or if i know i'm not going to be able to get a work out in. In the summer months i like to take long walks and ride my bike the three miles to work, takes time, but its still something towards cardovascular health.

Wii Fit sounds interesting, I've been running 3+ miles three times a week for the last month, started out on just under 2 miles per day the month before so making progress but still need to improve on the healthy eating part :) even though I'm eat much more fruits these days.

I play indoor basketball. It's great for staying fit. It has a large cardio component to it.

I definitely eat pretty healthy and also used to bike to and from classes, although that doesn't count for much. Lastly, I go clubbing/dancing. Sometimes, it can be surprising how it makes my legs sore...

I just go to work! 60 hrs of light continuous exercise a week. I do snowdon every month or so, and a couple of walks around the lanes or on the sandstone ridge that passes through our area. Im seriously considering the National Three Peaks Challenge. (climb the biggest mountain in England, Scotland and Wales within 24hrs... inc the 12ish hrs driving) That would be one for next year. Im not that fit yet! I could do two easily but three.....?

I play this Gold's Gym Cardio Workout now, until recently the most exercise I got was walking to the fridge.

Lucky bustard! :chk: Basketball is my favourite sport and I used to play quite a lot (not that I was any good but still...). But since moving to the UK, I could not find anyone to play with on my terms. Wherever I played was either too serious, as in actual leagues and tournaments etc (fights and arguments on the courts etc), or not serious at all, literally people who can hardly dribble, not to mention the bear basics of the sport.

The only place which suited me was work related and meant driving for 40 minutes every Monday... soon became very tedious and irrelevant...

    Poo.... :(

Continue to consider seriously! It is a killer! Some guys from work did the challenge last year. They did not make it as some of the team suffered with injuries and fatigue. They were all young and reasonably fit people. Most of them said they did not expect it to be so tough and will never try it again. Some were physically scarred for life (no joke!).

There is a lot of pressure involved. If I were you, I would start training now!!! In any case good luck hope you make it. Sounds like a proper achievement even if not completed on time...

Ahh man that sucks! I can't imagine how it would be to want to play my favorite sport but not being able to find anyone to play with... I live in the US, so basketball is obviously very popular here. There are never any problems finding games. Sorry about your situation :(
