I built my own computer about a year ago. Everything was fine until last week. The cpu fan started making a ticking sound (the fan was hitting the metal heat sink). Also at the same time the computer started turning off after 1-2 minutes of being on. I can log onto my account but after around 20 seconds the computer just shuts off.

The weird thing is that it wouldn't just power off automatically. Instead it would shut off through the operating system (go through all the shutoff steps and the "Windows is shutting down" screen).

At first I figured the fan was slowing and the cpu was overheating. But after I replaced the cpu fan I still get the same problem with the computer shutting off. I thought it might have been the hard drive failing but the computer also powers off when i go into bios (after 1-2 minutes of being in bios).

Now I can't run a diagnostic through bios so I don't know what the problem is. I don't really know enough about hardware to pinpoint the problem. And I'm not rich enough to replace everything until the problem gets fixed.

Does anyone have any idea on how to pinpoint the problem? Is it possible that the cpu got permanently damaged? Or maybe it's more likely to be the power supply?

My first guess would be the CPU cooling. Check to make sure the heatsink is secure and nothing is interfering with the fan operation. It's possible the fan went bad and isn't pushing the air through. If you bought the boxed CPU, then try using the stock cooler after removing the old one (system off) and cleaning off the thermal paste or pad with isopropyl alcohol. The stock cooler might not cool as well, but that would be the way I'd go about it.

If it's within the first 30-days, I'm sure Newegg will replace the defective unit if that's the case.

The original was the stock one. That's the one that had the defective fan. I just replaced it with the new one (that I linked to). I'll try cleaning the top of the area where the cooler and cpu are connected.

sounds like power switch to me dude because you said in your post "it goes throught the OS shut down steps as if to say it's received the signal from the power switch to shut down" And it aint a virus either loading in a dodgy dll because it also shuts down from within the bios.So just try diconnecting the power switch from the motherboards control panel and use a flat head screw driver to short the two power switch pins.
